Newcomers to Canada can access free online financial literacy workshops through Georgian College, with the first of six “Thrifty Thursdays” sessions on September 10, 2026. Each one-hour session runs from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m., helping attendees learn the basics of Canadian finances.
The first workshop, “A Newcomer’s Guide to Canadian Finances,” is followed by “The Money Map” on September 17, then “Living a Financially Healthy Life” on October 1. Later sessions cover debt and credit (October 15), entrepreneurship (October 29), and newcomer income taxes (November 12), with subsequent sessions falling every two weeks after the first two. All workshops require online registration.
The series is co-presented by the Canadian Foundation for Economic Education, a non-profit founded in 1974 that has worked with nearly 800 immigrant-serving agencies across Canada. The group also runs the “Managing Your Money in Canada” website for newcomers.
Georgian College is offering incentives for participation. Anyone who attends a full workshop and completes the feedback form within one hour is entered in a draw for a $100 PC grocery gift card. Attendees who join at least four workshops in the semester are entered to win $250 on their ONEcard and earn a Financial Literacy badge for LinkedIn plus a co-curricular record.
The workshops come as Orangeville’s newcomer supports grow. Polycultural Immigrant and Community Services recently opened a local office serving Dufferin County with services in 20 languages, including employment help, free English classes, and citizenship preparation.
