Watson Lake, Yukon residents are getting a new tool to help them prepare for emergencies. The Town of Watson Lake Protective Services has completed a community-wide maildrop of the Be Prepared Emergency Preparedness Pamphlet to all households in the community.
The printed guide covers practical steps for building an emergency kit, preparing pets, keeping supplies in a vehicle, and dealing with severe weather. It also explains the difference between Shelter in Place and an Evacuation Order.
“The pamphlet is designed to help residents prepare themselves, their families, their pets and their property for emergencies in and around our community,” according to the Town of Watson Lake.
The guide also includes QR codes that link to online emergency resources, including the town’s Emergency Preparedness Hub at watsonlake.ca/emergencies. Residents can use the hub to register for Watson Lake Alerts, which sends direct emergency notifications, and the new Household Emergency Support Registry. The registry is voluntary and helps emergency planners identify households that may need extra support during an evacuation, power outage, or severe weather.
A Household Accountability Contact Card is built into the pamphlet. It can be cut out and kept handy to record household members, emergency contacts, an out-of-town contact, and meeting places.
The maildrop comes after Watson Lake Town Council reviewed a draft Emergency Management Plan in December 2025 and discussed creating a quick reference guide for residents. Having printed materials is especially useful when power, internet, or cellular service goes down during an emergency.
