Staff Sergeant Devron Dittmer, who has commanded the High Level RCMP Detachment for more than three years, is leaving for a new role at RCMP National Headquarters in Ottawa. The Town of High Level publicly thanked Dittmer for his leadership through significant challenges, including the Fox Lake wildfires and the arrival of evacuees.
“S/Sgt. Dittmer has served in northern Alberta for 10 years – more than half his career. He was detachment commander in High Level for more than three years,” the Town said in a newsflash on its website. “As he prepares to take on a new role with the RCMP’s National Headquarters, S/Sgt. Dittmer thanked the Town and the community for their support.”
Mayor Josh Lambert publicly thanked Dittmer for his leadership over the past three years, saying he “led the detachment through some challenging times” with “a strong relationship built on cooperation and trust.” The Town credited Dittmer with guiding local RCMP members through the Fox Lake wildfires of May 2023 and the subsequent influx of thousands of evacuees into High Level. The wildfire destroyed 20 homes, the Little Red River Cree Nation RCMP detachment, and a Northern Store, forcing approximately 3,700 residents to evacuate.
High Level, located about 800 kilometres north of Edmonton, serves as a regional hub for a trading area of 20,000 to 28,000 people. During Dittmer’s tenure, the relationship between the Town and the RCMP detachment was characterized by close cooperation and trust, according to Mayor Lambert.
Dittmer also credited community partnerships in previous successful investigations, noting that proactive enforcement combined with assistance from community members, local businesses, and Crime Stoppers led to positive outcomes. His departure marks a leadership change for the detachment in High Level.
