Older adults in Muskoka will have a chance to learn smartphone basics through a new free program this fall. The District Municipality of Muskoka is launching SmartStart, a six-week course for beginners that covers downloading apps, taking photos, using smartphone assistants, and staying safe online.
The program is funded by a $25,000 grant from the Province of Ontario’s Seniors Community Grant Program. It was developed with help from an older adult volunteer advisory group and the Literacy Society of South Muskoka.
Sessions start September 30 at Raymond Community Centre and October 1 at Village Square in Vankoughnet. Each weekly session is two hours, and participants can bring any smartphone brand, including Apple, Samsung, Google, or Motorola. The small-group format lets people learn at their own pace.
Muskoka has one of Ontario’s oldest populations. In 2021, 28.3% of residents were 65 or older, compared to the national average of 19%. The SmartStart program aims to meet the needs of that growing demographic by helping seniors stay connected with family and access digital services.
More sessions are planned for Torrance, Baysville, and Severn Bridge in late 2026 and early 2027. Registration opened September 16. To sign up, call 705-645-2100 Ext. 4199 or email [email protected].
