Drivers in Bracebridge will soon see new speed limit signs on three roads following a safety review by the District of Muskoka. Council approved the changes on August 20, 2026, and they will take effect as soon as new signs are installed in the coming weeks.
The changes affect Doe Lake Road, Manitoba Street, and Taylor Road. On Doe Lake Road, the speed limit will go up from 60 km/h to 70 km/h between Uffington Road and Housey’s Rapids Road. On Manitoba Street, the limit will drop from 50 km/h to 40 km/h between Monck Road and Ecclestone Drive. And on Taylor Road, the speed limit will fall from 50 km/h to 30 km/h between Front Street and Manitoba Street.
This is the first area-wide review under the District’s updated Speed Limit Policy, which was introduced in 2025. Under the new policy, all District roads are reviewed over a six-year period, one area municipality at a time. Bracebridge was the first community to be reviewed.
James Steele, Commissioner of Engineering and Public Works for the District, said speed limits should match the road, its surroundings, and how people use it. The review looked at road conditions, traffic speeds, land uses, collision history, and pedestrian activity.
The District manages about 730 kilometres of roads across Muskoka. District roads in the Township of Georgian Bay are currently under review, with recommendations expected to go to committee in 2027.
