The Town of Ajax is inviting residents to learn how they can support local wildlife by hosting a free gardening workshop later this month. The event, titled Gardening for Birds, Butterflies and Beyond, will take place on Thursday, April 30, 2026, from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Ajax Public Library, Main Branch, located at 55 Harwood Avenue South.
Presented in partnership with the Toronto and Region Conservation Authority, the session is part of the town’s annual Green Living Days programming. During the workshop, participants will receive free gardening fact sheets and guides on how to design their own backyards to better attract and protect native pollinators.
The session focuses on supporting species that have seen significant declines in recent years. Monarch butterflies, for instance, were officially ranked as endangered under Canada’s Species at Risk Act in December 2023. Additionally, the session will highlight the needs of the Ruby-throated Hummingbird, which is the only common hummingbird species found in Ontario.
Ajax Mayor Shaun Collier has encouraged the community to get involved in the various activities offered throughout the Green Living Days initiative. The mayor noted that every action taken at home contributes to a cleaner and greener town.
Registration for the workshop is required. Residents interested in attending can find more information through the Town of Ajax website.
