Durham Regional Police are warning Ajax residents about an organized group of burglars breaking into homes by pretending to be landscapers or tradespeople, often using nearby trails to access backyards and ladders to get inside during the day.
Police issued a public safety advisory on July 23, 2026, after a string of break-ins across Durham Region, including Ajax. Since April, at least 11 homes in Clarington have been hit, with more incidents reported in Ajax and Pickering, said Const. Nicholas Gluckstein of Durham Regional Police Service.
The suspects target homes that back onto parks, trails, or greenspaces. They use ladders from the yard or a neighbouring property to climb into second-storey windows, or they smash sliding glass doors. By carrying landscaping tools and work equipment, they blend in while moving through neighbourhoods.
The break-ins happen during daylight hours when people are usually out. Stolen items include electronics, cash, and jewelry. In one case, thieves made off with over $40,000 worth of jewelry.
Police describe the suspects as males wearing medical masks, baseball hats, dark shorts, t-shirts, and gloves. They often carry backpacks and landscaping tools. Surveillance images of at least two suspects have been released to the public.
Residents are urged to verify credentials before allowing anyone claiming to be a tradesperson into their home. Anyone with information is asked to contact Durham Regional Police.
