Environment Canada has issued a rainfall warning for Ajax, Ontario, on March 11, 2026, as heavy rain on frozen ground is expected to cause flooding on local streets. The weather service expects between 20 and 40 mm of rain throughout the day, which will likely pool in low-lying areas because the soil is too soaked to absorb the water.
According to Environment Canada, the rainfall amounts could be even higher in areas that experience thunderstorms. The warning was officially updated at 8:55 AM and is expected to stay in place for the remainder of the day.
The ground across the community is currently frozen or wet from previous weather, which means it cannot soak up the new rainfall. This situation increases the chance of runoff since the water has nowhere to go but onto the pavement and into local ditches.
Residents are advised to stay away from rivers, creeks, and culverts while the rain continues. Drivers should also avoid travelling through any flooded roadways, as it is difficult to tell how deep the water is or if the road underneath has been damaged.
The Central Lake Ontario Conservation Authority is responsible for monitoring flood risks and managing the local watersheds in the region. People living in the Southern Durham Region are encouraged to keep an eye on further weather updates until the rain stops.
