Amherstburg drivers should expect delays and detours over the coming weeks as the County of Essex launches five new road construction projects, with two directly affecting roads in and around Amherstburg.
Beginning Monday, September 14, County Road 20 will be closed entirely between County Road 3 (Malden Road) and County Road 10 (Middle Sideroad). That closure is expected to last one week, followed by three weeks of lane restrictions while crews rehabilitate a culvert. The closure will affect anyone travelling through that stretch of Amherstburg.
Starting Tuesday, September 8, County Road 11 on the Amherstburg-Essex border will also see lane restrictions for road construction between Texas Road and County Road 12. Those restrictions are part of a broader construction and road closures update issued by the county.
Separately, work is set to begin September 14 on the final phase of the long-running County Road 42 widening project. Phase 5 will extend four-lane capacity from the roundabout at County Road 43 (Banwell Road) westward toward the Windsor border, with major construction continuing through December 2026 and resuming in spring 2027. The entire County Road 42 expansion project started in October 2022 and is expected to be completed by summer 2027.
Motorists are advised to follow posted detours and allow extra travel time. The county’s 2026 road construction program totals more than $111 million, with nearly $80 million dedicated to roadway expansion.
