Amherstburg residents are facing a stretch of hot, sticky weather this week, with Environment Canada issuing a heat warning for Windsor-Essex County. Daytime highs are expected to reach 30 to 32 degrees Celsius through Wednesday, with humidex values near 38 making it feel even hotter.
The warm spell began Monday and could extend into Thursday. Overnight lows will only drop to 20 to 22 degrees, offering little relief from the heat. Environment Canada says the hottest day is likely Tuesday, with a high of 32 and a humidex of 40.
Showers and thunderstorms are also in the forecast, with a 60 percent chance of rain Tuesday afternoon and a 40 percent chance Wednesday. The risk of sudden downpours means anyone planning outdoor activities should be ready to take cover and stay hydrated.
The Windsor-Essex County Health Unit warns that older adults, infants, young children, people who work or exercise in the heat, and those with certain medical conditions are especially at risk from the high temperatures. Residents are encouraged to check on vulnerable neighbours and limit time outdoors during the hottest parts of the day.
Conditions are expected to improve by late week, with temperatures dipping to a more seasonal 27 degrees by Friday and a reduced chance of showers. Until then, Amherstburg’s waterfront location along the Detroit River and Lake Erie will keep humidity levels elevated, adding to the muggy feel.
