The Town of Antigonish, in partnership with the Make Your Move Antigonish initiative, has extended a community survey seeking input on how students travel to and from local schools. The extension was announced as of June 22, 2026, giving families with school-age children more time to share their perspectives on active and safe transportation options.
Make Your Move Antigonish is a community initiative aiming to create a cultural shift where movement becomes a social norm, celebrating movement at school, at work, at home, in community and to get places. The survey aims to gather feedback that will help shape future transportation planning.
Under Nova Scotia’s School Transportation Policy, which took effect in September 2020, elementary students including pre-primary who live more than 1.6 km from school are eligible for busing, while middle and secondary students qualify if they live more than 2.4 km away. Within the Town of Antigonish, schools include the Antigonish Education Centre for pre-primary through grade 4, St. Andrew Junior School for grades 5 to 8, and Dr. John Hugh Gillis Regional High School for grades 9 to 12, which serves about 823 students.
The town has long been working on an Active Transportation Plan to improve walking and cycling infrastructure. This survey is part of a broader push to better understand how families navigate school commutes, especially for students who live within the distances where walking may be expected but who may face safety or accessibility concerns.
Residents with school-age children are encouraged to take part. For questions about bus eligibility, stops, or routes, families can contact SRCE Transportation at 902-747-3645 or toll-free at 1-800-650-4448.
