A 27-year-old woman was taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries after her SUV crashed through a fence and fell roughly 16 feet into a construction pit on Coulter Street in Barrie, Ontario, on the evening of June 3, 2026.
Emergency crews were called to the site at 53 Coulter Street, behind Bayfield Mall, around 7:20 p.m. The area is being developed into a 12-storey apartment building with 188 rental units, including 38 affordable homes.
Barrie Police said the construction zone was clearly marked with a metal fence and warning markers, and alcohol or drugs are not believed to be factors. The investigation is ongoing.
A bystander, Rob Johnson, was first at the scene and climbed into the pit to help. He pulled open the vehicle door, confirmed the driver was alive, and kept her conscious until emergency crews arrived. Barrie Fire crews used a ladder to lift the woman out with help from paramedics, and she was taken to Royal Victoria Regional Health Centre. The SUV was winched out by a tow truck about two hours later.
The incident comes four years after a crash at another Barrie construction site on McKay Road in August 2022, where six young people died when their vehicle entered a closed zone and fell into a shaft. That tragedy raised questions about construction safety in the growing city, which is on track for a record housing year with roughly 570 new units started in early 2026.
