The Town of Bay Roberts is installing eight new speed humps and five new stop-controlled intersections across the municipality, as part of ongoing efforts to improve road safety and address traffic concerns. The announcement was made on September 14, 2026, and motorists are advised to watch for new signage and changes to traffic patterns as installations proceed.
The eight new speed humps will be placed on George Mercer Drive, Country Road, Picketts Road, Water Street, Butlerville Road, Shearstown Road, Central Street, and Neck Road. Four new three-way stops will be established at Shearstown Road and New Hill Road, Central Street and Cross Road, Water Street and Cross Road, and Neck Road and Kellys Road. A new four-way stop will be added at Marina Place, Water Street, and Klondyke.
This latest round of traffic calming follows previous measures, including rumble strips installed on Country Road in 2024 after residents complained about speeding. A 2016 Transportation Master Plan by Harbourside Engineering Group noted that many Bay Roberts streets are narrow and not well suited to urban growth, with safety concerns arising from increased traffic on Conception Bay Highway.
The Town of Bay Roberts has allocated $517,000 for paving and traffic calming in its 2026 budget. Mayor Geoff Seymour and council members are moving forward with the initiative to address speeding in residential areas. The town previously faced controversy when a roughly $500,000 traffic signal project at Route 70 and Sawdust Road was never activated due to a pole being installed on private property.
Residents can expect temporary disruptions as crews install the new humps and signs. The town asks drivers to obey the new stop signs and reduce speeds in the affected areas. For more information, visit the Town of Bay Roberts.
