The Community Government of Behchokǫ̀ is taking derelict vehicles off private lots in the Northwest Territories community through June 17, 2026, in a cleanup effort aimed at improving safety and appearance in residential areas.
The one-month program, which began May 19, offers free towing and a $125 payment for each eligible vehicle removed. The community says the vehicles must be registered at a Behchokǫ̀ address, and the legal owner must provide proof of ownership and sign a waiver.
Senior Administrative Officer Pushp Seth said the community has seen more abandoned and inoperable vehicles on private lots, which he said create fire and environmental risks. The program is limited to individual residents, and commercial or business vehicles are not eligible.
Vehicles damaged in wildfires are not part of the program. Residents who want to take part can call the Administration Office at 867-392-6500 for removal details.
