Residents of Behchokǫ̀ are being urged to exercise caution while outdoors as extreme wind chill conditions persist in the region. Although Environment Canada currently reports no official weather alerts for the community, wind chill values reached -25°C early Tuesday morning, April 7, 2026.
According to Environment Canada, the actual temperature recorded at the local weather station was -19.1°C. While these conditions are consistent with the typical early April temperature range for the area, the wind chill significantly increases the risk of cold-related injury.
Health experts note that at wind chill levels between -25°C and -27°C, frostbite can occur on exposed skin in as little as 15 to 30 minutes. Community members who work or exercise outdoors, as well as young children, older adults, and those with chronic illnesses, are at a higher risk of injury during this cold snap.
To support community members, the Tłı̨chǫ Government has established a warming shelter designed to provide a safe space for vulnerable residents during periods of extreme weather. Those in need of support or health services can also contact the Tłı̨chǫ Community Services Agency at (867) 392-3011.
Temperatures are expected to moderate throughout the afternoon, with a forecasted wind chill of -6°C. Residents are encouraged to monitor the latest local conditions and dress in appropriate layers if they must spend time outdoors.
