Residents in Behchokǫ̀ have the opportunity to build professional skills this spring through a series of training courses offered by Aurora College. From April 2 to May 21, 2026, the community will host sessions covering practical skills such as Excel spreadsheet formatting, customer service training, proposal writing, and meeting procedures. The sessions will be held at the Mowhi Community Learning Centre in Behchokǫ̀.
The training sessions are led by instructor Heather Lyon and are designed to help local residents develop job-ready computer and professional abilities. Pricing for these programs starts at $175 for individual three-hour workshops, with other workshops ranging up to $600 for two-day courses. More comprehensive options are also available, including the IAP2 Public Participation certificate series, which costs $2,500 and is delivered in partnership with Dialogue Partners Inc.
These training opportunities come as the territory continues to adjust its approach to adult education. While Aurora College closed its 19 physical community learning centres on June 30, 2025, due to concerns regarding enrollment and operating costs, the college continues to offer some community‑based programming through alternative delivery models. The Government of the Northwest Territories has also introduced an interim solution to maintain access to training. This strategy includes partnering with Northern organizations to provide employment readiness programs that feature classroom instruction and supported work models.
Behchokǫ̀, the largest First Nations community in the Northwest Territories, remains a focus for these educational initiatives as the college transitions into a polytechnic university.
