The Tłı̨chǫ Government Justice and Victim Services Division is running a free Youth Canadian Firearms Safety Course in Behchokǫ̀, Northwest Territories, from July 27 to 31.
The five-day course will teach young people how to handle, store, and transport firearms safely, along with the laws that apply. Participants who complete the course will receive a certificate from the Canadian Firearms Safety Course program, which is required for first-time firearms licence applicants.
Classes run each day from 10:00 AM to 3:00 PM on the Mezzanine level of the Sportsplex. The training comes at a time when all hunters in the territory must have government-approved hunter education before they can get a hunting licence, a rule that started in 2020 under the territory’s Wildlife Act.
Behchokǫ̀, the largest Dene community in the Northwest Territories with about 1,746 people, is located roughly 110 kilometres northwest of Yellowknife on the shore of Great Slave Lake. Hunting has long been part of daily life in the area, and the Tłı̨chǫ Government regularly supports programs that blend cultural traditions with modern safety training.
