The Tłı̨chǫ Department of Culture & Lands Protection is now accepting applications for the 2026 Hide Tanning Camp, an immersive program that invites community members to learn traditional skills. Residents of Behchokǫ̀ and all other Tłı̨chǫ communities have until May 1, 2026, at 5:00 p.m. to apply for this opportunity.
The 13-day program will take place in Gamètì from May 31 to June 12, 2026. Participants will gain hands-on experience in traditional hide preparation, including skinning, framing, fleshing, and processing techniques. These practices have been passed down through generations and remain a vital part of Tłı̨chǫ cultural heritage.
The camp will be held at the Gamètì Cultural Camp, a facility that features bunkhouses and a main building designed to support land-based learning and cultural ceremonies. This initiative is open to Tłı̨chǫ citizens from Behchokǫ̀, Whatì, Gamètì, Wekweètì, and Yellowknife. Those who successfully complete the training program will be provided with a training allowance.
The Tłı̨chǫ Government operates this program to help preserve and transmit traditional knowledge. By connecting participants with Elders, the camp creates space for dialogue about culture, healing, and traditional land-based practices, building on the success of the long-running Tłı̨chǫ Įmbè Program.
Individuals interested in the program can reach out to Janelle Nitsiza, the research coordinator for the department, at 867-444-3113 or by email at [email protected]. Belinda Blackduck, the Gameti Community Director, is also available as a contact for those seeking more information.
