A Blackfalds community group wants to create a quiet public garden for reflection and learning, and it asked town council for support at a meeting on September 15, 2026. The Heart of Blackfalds Society presented its Heart Garden proposal to the Standing Committee of Council at 6:00 PM at the Civic Cultural Centre (5018 Waghorn Street).
Tricia Willis and Mackenzie Read from the society shared a draft design and sought the town’s consent to move forward with the project. The proposed garden is described as a passive natural space for education and reflection, intended to be open to all residents.
The Heart of Blackfalds Society is a volunteer organization focused on building community and supporting creative local initiatives. It previously sponsored the Love Locks Heart display at the Abbey Centre, a permanent steel heart where people can attach locks in honour of loved ones, created in partnership with Lacombe Composite High School welding students and Comet Welding Ltd. The group also organizes the annual Blackfalds Block Party, which drew more than 800 people last year.
Council listened to the presentation and gave direction on whether to support the garden. The town is currently updating its Municipal Development Plan, with parks and open spaces as the first phase of public input, so the garden proposal may align with those priorities.
Other items on the meeting agenda include community grant policies, off-site levy bylaw revisions, the Annual Budget and Taxation Process Policy, and the Duty to Document Policy. The full agenda is available on the Town of Blackfalds website.
