The Brantford Fire Department promoted Alicia Betlejemski to the rank of captain in early March 2026. This promotion marks the first time a woman has held the rank of captain in the history of the department’s fire suppression division in Brantford, Ontario.
Betlejemski has a long history with the department, having been hired as its first female firefighter in 2003. This new appointment follows her 23-year career of service to the local community.
The department has seen its diversity grow over the years and now employs approximately 12 or 13 female firefighters in fire suppression roles. Betlejemski has noted her commitment to acting as a resource and mentor for other women entering the profession.
The Brantford Professional Fire Fighters Association also recognized the promotion. This milestone is considered a significant step for gender diversity and leadership within the city’s emergency response teams.
