The Bridgewater Fire Department is inviting the community to celebrate its 150th anniversary with a free open house on May 30, 2026. The event will take place at the department station located at 81 Dominion Street from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.
Established on May 29, 1876, the department began as a Hook and Ladder Protection Company formed in the office of James Curll by local lawyer John J. McLean. Today, the service is maintained by approximately 50 volunteers who provide fire, motor vehicle collision, and ice and water rescue services to the residents of Bridgewater.
The open house will offer attendees the opportunity to tour emergency vehicles, meet local firefighters, and learn about the department history. The Bridgewater Fire Department Band, which has been active since 1868 and stands as one of the oldest volunteer fire service bands in Canada, will provide live music throughout the afternoon. The band will also debut a new musical piece created specifically for the anniversary.
In addition to the music and tours, the afternoon will feature a free barbecue serving hot dogs and cake, along with bouncy houses for children. The celebration is supported by various local corporate sponsors, including Nova Scotia Power, Acadia Broadcasting, Michelin, and Bridgewater Pharmasave.
