Bus service in Cambridge and across the Waterloo Region will continue as planned after the Region of Waterloo and Unifor Local 4304 reached a tentative agreement on April 30, 2026. The deal, which covers approximately 850 employees including bus operators, maintenance staff, and reservationists, successfully averted a work stoppage that was set to begin at 12:01 a.m. on May 1.
The negotiations, which began on February 9, 2026, focused on key priorities for staff such as wages, benefits, and scheduling. Tensions had been high leading up to the deadline, with union members delivering a 93% mandate in favour of strike action earlier in April.
All Grand River Transit services, including the MobilityPLUS program for residents with disabilities, are operating on their normal schedules. The union membership is set to vote on ratifying the new contract on Sunday, May 3, 2026.
