The Municipality of North Cypress-Langford has opened registration for those interested in becoming emergency medical responders, a move aimed at bolstering front-line emergency support in the region. The initiative, announced on April 30, 2026, provides a pathway for local residents to train and gain certification for essential medical services, which will directly support the efforts of the Carberry North Cypress-Langford Fire Department.
The local fire department, which serves both the town of Carberry and the surrounding rural areas, relies on a dedicated team of volunteers to provide emergency aid. These local responders play a critical role in community safety, as demonstrated during their involvement in the emergency response to the bus collision that occurred near Carberry on June 15, 2023.
To assist with the training process, the Manitoba government is offering a $5,000 bursary to eligible students who complete the program. Participants who receive this funding must enter into a one-year return-of-service agreement once they are hired. The training program itself spans approximately 320 hours, reflecting updated provincial standards introduced in 2022.
Upon completing the course, graduates are required to pass the Canadian Organization of Paramedic Regulators entry to practice examination. Following the exam, successful candidates must register with the College of Paramedics of Manitoba to officially practice. The province expects approximately 50 to 60 new responders to graduate and become eligible for provincial emergency medical services by the fall of 2026.
Residents interested in learning more about the registration process can find additional information through the Municipality of North Cypress-Langford.
