The Carstairs & District Agricultural Society is bringing back its popular Gymkhana event on Saturday, July 11, 2026, from 1 to 4 p.m. at the Carstairs Rodeo Grounds at 1251 10th Avenue. The afternoon of timed horse-riding competitions is open to riders and is the second in a summer series of three Gymkhanas hosted by the society.
A Gymkhana is an equestrian event featuring speed pattern racing and timed games such as barrel racing, pole bending, flag racing, and stake races. It gives local riders a chance to sharpen their skills in a fun, competitive setting right here in Carstairs.
Anyone wanting to take part must register ahead of time online. The sign-up form can be found on the society’s event page. The earlier June 14 event kicked off the series, and another Gymkhana is already scheduled for August 9, so families can plan for a full summer of riding.
The July 11 Gymkhana is also a lead-up to the 39th annual Beef & Barley Days festival, running July 17 to 19. This year’s festival is extra special because the Carstairs & District Agricultural Society is marking its 50th anniversary. Established in 1976, the society has spent five decades organizing community events and caring for local facilities like the rodeo grounds, which are owned by the Town of Carstairs.
The rodeo grounds will be a hub of activity all month. After the Gymkhana, Beef & Barley Days will feature a junior rodeo, a parade themed “Salute to Agriculture,” a pancake breakfast with the Carstairs & Community Chamber of Commerce, and many other free family events.
