Carstairs, Alberta is in for a dramatic weather swing, with a risk of frost Friday night giving way to a sunny and warm weekend. Environment Canada forecasts that temperatures will drop to a low of 3°C overnight, putting sensitive plants at risk before conditions improve steadily through the weekend.
The forecast, issued at 5:00 a.m. MDT Friday, calls for cloudy skies and a 30 percent chance of early evening showers, followed by partly cloudy conditions and fog patches developing overnight. Winds from the north are expected to ease as the night progresses. Residents are advised to cover or bring in any tender plants, as the overnight low is well below the normal June minimum of 6°C.
By Saturday morning, the fog patches are expected to clear, leading to a sunny day with a high of 18°C. The warm-up continues Sunday with sunny skies and a high of 22°C. Monday will see a mix of sun and cloud and a high of 23°C, giving residents ideal conditions for outdoor activities to wrap up the weekend.
According to the Alberta Climate Information Service, the average last spring frost in the province typically occurs between early May and early June, making a frost risk in mid-June unusual but not unheard of. Current conditions at the Olds weather station early Friday showed a temperature of 7.1°C with 90 percent humidity.
The full Environment Canada forecast for Carstairs shows normal June highs of 19°C and lows of 6°C. Sunrise on Friday is at 5:19 a.m. MDT, with sunset at 9:54 p.m., giving plenty of daylight for weekend plans once the frost risk passes.
