The Town of Churchill has called off its planned group community clean-up and barbecue due to bad weather. Instead, the northern Manitoba community is asking residents to clean up around their own properties between now and June 19.
Garbage bags and gloves are available for pickup at the Town Office in the Town Centre Complex. The office is open Monday to Friday from 8:30 a.m. to noon and 1:00 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.
“The Town annually hosts a Community Cleanup and Curb-Side giveaway weekend,” notes information on the Town’s website. This year, residents who take part on their own can snap a photo of their work and email it to [email protected] to enter a prize draw. The Town says it hopes to reschedule the community barbecue once conditions improve, and that the solo cleanup format could become an annual event.
The change comes as Churchill continues to adapt its waste handling after an April 2024 fire destroyed the Waste Transfer Facility. The Town has since partnered with Polar Bears International on bear-proof bins and launched a recycling pilot with Thompson Recycling.
