Residents of Churchill, Manitoba can expect a week of varied conditions as a gradual clearing trend brings pleasant weather for outdoor activities, according to Environment Canada.
Monday will see morning fog patches giving way to clearing skies and a high of 14°C, though brisk north winds gusting to 50 km/h will keep things cool. Temperatures will climb mid-week with sunny conditions Wednesday and Thursday reaching highs of 19°C and 17°C respectively. Tuesday carries a 30 per cent chance of afternoon showers with a risk of a thunderstorm, but will still reach 19°C. Friday rounds out the work week with clearing and a high of 14°C.
Though the forecast falls slightly below the seasonal norm of 18°C, the extended daylight remains a highlight with sunrise at 4:40 a.m. and sunset not until 10:05 p.m. The UV index will sit at moderate levels of 4 or 5, meaning a hat and sunscreen are still wise for those heading out.
Summer is peak tourism season in the remote Hudson Bay community, where visitors come for beluga whale watching on the Churchill River, polar bear sightings along the coast, and tundra blanketed in wildflowers. Clear nights also offer a chance at catching the aurora borealis as darkness slowly returns to the northern sky, though true night is still limited in late July.
