The United Counties of Stormont, Dundas and Glengarry issued a safety warning on March 10, 2026, as a major winter storm moves through the Cornwall, Ontario, area. This weather system is expected to bring up to 24 hours of freezing rain and a risk of local flooding throughout the region.
According to Environment Canada, the storm could leave behind 10 to 20 millimetres of ice accumulation. The freezing rain began late Tuesday or early Wednesday morning and is expected to continue through Wednesday night, which may cause power outages and make roads dangerous for travel.
Local authorities are also watching for floods as temperatures rise and rain falls on ground that is already soaked. The Raisin Region Conservation Authority and South Nation Conservation warn that high water levels could lead to ice jams and flooding in fields and low-lying areas.
Residents are encouraged to put together an emergency kit that can support their household for at least 72 hours. These kits should include items such as bottled water, non-perishable food, flashlights, extra batteries, and any required medications.
Property owners should also take steps to protect their homes by testing sump pumps and making sure water can drain away from buildings. Taking the time to secure loose outdoor items can also help prevent damage during the storm.
