The City of Cornwall has officially installed several new traffic safety measures across the city to better protect pedestrians, cyclists, and drivers, the city announced on April 13, 2026. These updates, which include new all-way stop signs, solar-powered flashing lights, and speed-monitoring radar boards, are aimed at improving safety near schools and busy community areas.
Drivers will now encounter new all-way stop controls at three specific intersections: Surgenor Street and Joyce Street, Queen Street and Robertson Avenue, and Walton Street and St. Felix Street. The city has also installed red solar flashers at the intersections of Queen Street and Robertson Avenue, Walton Street and St. Felix Street, and Eleventh Street and Cumberland Avenue. Additionally, permanent speed radar boards have been placed on Water Street West to help manage speeds near Lamoureux Park.
These safety enhancements fall under the broader work of the Infrastructure and Municipal Works department, which manages street signage and traffic controls. The initiative builds upon a city-wide traffic calming plan that received funding in the 2024 capital budget and aligns with the Cornwall Police Service Traffic Safety Plan, originally established in 2018 to reduce collisions and injuries on local roads.
While these new stops are intended to increase safety, municipal officials emphasize that road users should remain alert as they adapt to the changes. Residents are encouraged to exercise caution and follow all new traffic patterns, as the city continues its work to balance traffic flow with the safety of all community members.
