Residents in Cornwall and Lancaster are being urged to prepare for heavy rain this weekend, as Environment Canada has issued a Special Weather Statement. Between 25 and 50 millimetres of rain is expected from Saturday into Saturday night, with the heaviest downpours moving through on April 4, 2026.
The rainfall is being driven by a weather system known as a Colorado low. According to Environment and Climate Change Canada, these storms originate in the lee of the Rocky Mountains and draw moisture from the Gulf of Mexico, often resulting in significant precipitation. While the forecast calls for steady rain, officials noted that thunderstorms could also develop, which may lead to higher localized rainfall amounts.
The Raisin Region Conservation Authority continues to monitor water levels closely across the region, including Cornwall, South Glengarry, North Glengarry, and South Stormont. With a wetter-than-normal spring predicted by The Weather Network, local soil conditions may have a reduced capacity to absorb the incoming moisture, increasing the risk of pooling water in low-lying areas, farm lanes, and driveways.
Residents are encouraged to stay informed as the storm approaches, as Environment Canada notes there is still some uncertainty regarding the exact path of the heaviest rain and that official rainfall warnings could be issued as conditions develop.
