A community initiative called Helping Hands is calling for donations of kitchenware, cups, and other essential household items to support families currently experiencing hardship in Cornwall, Ontario. The effort seeks to provide basic necessities to residents as local organizations continue to manage a significant increase in the demand for support services.
The need for such community initiatives comes at a time when food banks across the province are facing unprecedented pressure. According to the Feed Ontario 2025 Hunger Report, more than one million people utilized food bank services in Ontario between April 2024 and March 2025, marking an 87 percent increase since the 2019-2020 period. Carolyn Stewart, the chief executive officer of Feed Ontario, has stated that the demand for assistance is currently outpacing available resources.
In Cornwall, the Agapè Centre, which functions as the city’s largest food bank and community kitchen, reports serving more than 3,000 people each month, a total that includes approximately 1,000 children. Local challenges are further highlighted by data from the St. Vincent de Paul Food Bank, where a survey found that the average rent for the cheapest available accommodation is 743 dollars, while the shelter benefit for a single person receiving Ontario Works is only 733 dollars. This disparity leaves little funding for food and other essential items.
Although Cornwall is often cited as having one of the more manageable costs of living in the province, residents continue to navigate the strain of rising prices. Projections indicate a typical family of four in Canada could spend nearly 17,572 dollars on food in 2026, which is an increase of approximately 995 dollars from the previous year. Recent analysis from the United Way East Ontario suggests that while the 2026 provincial budget focuses on economic resilience, there are limited new investments to help social services keep pace with inflation and growing community needs.
