Residents in North Stormont and Cornwall will have a chance to help shape the region’s next five-year Community Safety and Well-Being Plan at two upcoming drop-in sessions. The United Counties of Stormont, Dundas and Glengarry (SDG Counties) and the City of Cornwall are hosting the events on September 17 at North Stormont Place and September 23 at the Benson Centre in Cornwall.
The sessions will let residents learn about the plan, share their perspectives, and help guide priorities for 2027 to 2031. Free food and childcare will be provided. A third session for Akwesasne is expected to be announced later.
The plan is required under Ontario’s Community Safety and Policing Act. Municipalities must update their plans every four years. The new plan builds on the 2022 Vibrant Communities Plan, which was endorsed by Cornwall, SDG, and Akwesasne councils in December 2019. That plan focused on four main areas: mental health, community safety, poverty, and health services.
In April 2025, oversight of the plan shifted from the Social Development Council of Cornwall and Area to in-house municipal leadership. Tanya Miller serves as Supervisor of Community Safety and Well-Being for the City of Cornwall and oversees development of the new plan.
At the drop-in sessions, residents can talk directly with planners about what matters most in their communities. The feedback will help set local priorities for the 2027–2031 plan, including how services work together to prevent problems before they happen.
