The Mohawk Council of Akwesasne announced a new phase of its Honoring Our Language and Culture with Traditional Medicines Program on March 3, 2026, to connect members of the Akwesasne community in the Cornwall area with traditional healing and language.
Cultural practitioners Levi Herne, Jasmine Jimerson, and Johnson Jimerson are leading the program by hosting workshops and cultural conversations. These sessions are held in the Mohawk language and teach community members how to gather and prepare traditional plants for medicine through the Traditional Medicines Mentorship Program.
A recent event brought students from the Akwesasne Freedom School to the Tsiionkwanonhso:te Long-Term Care Facility on Cornwall Island. The students and elders spent time together Smoke Dancing and sharing stories in their native language to keep their traditions alive.
This program provides cultural education and health support that will also be available during large local events like the Akwesasne International Powwow. This annual gathering takes place in Lamoureux Park every September and brings thousands of people to Cornwall to learn about the community.
