The 53rd annual Raisin River Canoe Race is set to take place this Saturday, April 11, 2026, with a record-breaking crowd of over 500 paddlers hitting the water. The event, which spans approximately 30 kilometres from St. Andrews West to Williamstown, has officially sold out for the first time in its history.
Organized by the Raisin Region Conservation Authority, the race has been a local tradition since 1973. It is held during the spring, when melting snow typically provides favourable water levels for participants. While the race is a popular community event, organizers are reminding paddlers to remain cautious. The authority has issued a water safety statement noting that while river levels have returned to normal for this time of year, fast currents, unstable riverbanks, and lingering ice can still create hazardous conditions.
Safety remains a top priority for the race, which is supported by the South Glengarry and South Stormont fire departments, the Ontario Provincial Police, and the Amateur Radio Emergency Services. All participants must follow mandatory safety rules, including wearing approved life jackets at all times, carrying a whistle, and keeping a 50-foot rope attached to their vessel. Paddlers are also encouraged to use designated portage routes to safely bypass the Martintown Dam.
For those attending the event, community meals are available throughout the day. The Knights of Columbus will host a pre-race breakfast at the St. Andrews Parish Hall from 7 a.m. to 11 a.m.
Due to the high demand and the event reaching capacity, organizers have confirmed that no day-of registrations will be available.
