Residents in Dauphin, Manitoba, are facing a blast of late-season cold this weekend as bitter winds and freezing temperatures move into the region. According to Environment Canada, the cold snap is expected to drive temperatures down to minus 13 degrees tonight, with wind chill values dropping near minus 18.
The cold weather follows a week of milder temperatures across the Parkland region. Throughout the day today, northwest winds are expected to gust as high as 60 km/h, with temperatures falling to a high of minus 6 degrees this afternoon. The chilly conditions are set to continue into Monday, which will see sunny skies but a high of only minus 3 degrees, with morning wind chill values reaching minus 20.
The drop in temperature is well below the usual seasonal norms for early April, when the area typically sees daytime highs near 8 degrees. Because of these low wind chill values, Environment Canada and Manitoba Health advise that exposed skin can develop frostbite in minutes. Residents are encouraged to limit time spent outdoors, ensure that pets are brought inside, and check on neighbours who may be vulnerable to the cold.
