Grimsby Power is urging local residents to remain vigilant following reports of individuals falsely claiming to represent the utility company to gain access to private homes. The company issued an alert on April 22, 2026, confirming that it does not send staff to residences to offer advice on electricity savings or to discuss high bills.
Utility officials emphasize that they do not conduct unsolicited home visits for these purposes. Residents who receive such requests are advised to verify the visitor’s credentials immediately and report any suspicious behavior. This warning comes as the province prepares for the end of the seasonal non-payment disconnection ban, which runs annually from November 15 to April 30.
Energy-related fraud has seen a significant rise across the province. According to the Ontario Energy Board, reports of energy sector scams increased by 77 percent between 2020 and 2022. Similar deceptive tactics have been identified in neighboring regions, including a warning issued by Niagara Peninsula Energy in late 2023 regarding door-to-door visitors.
Anyone with concerns about their account or electricity bill should contact the utility directly by calling 905-945-5437 and pressing 2. The office is located at 231 Roberts Road in Grimsby and is open Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
Suspicious activity can be reported to the Niagara Regional Police Service via their non-emergency line at 905-688-4111. Residents may also contact the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre at 1-888-495-8501 to report potential scams.
