The Town of Grimsby is inviting residents to take home a free tree as part of an effort to expand the local tree canopy. The event will take place on Saturday, May 9, 2026, from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at Southward Park.
Organized by the Town of Grimsby and the Grimsby Green Advisory Committee, the giveaway coincides with the town’s Community Safety Day. Residents who attend can pick up smaller stock trees on a first-come, first-served basis. Available species include Red Maple, Hackberry, Eastern Redbud, and Canadian Serviceberry.
While the town also offered larger potted trees, those have already been claimed due to high demand. Those who submitted pre-registration forms for the larger stock should wait for an email confirmation from town staff to verify if their tree is secured.
Anyone participating in the giveaway must bring proof of address. The trees are intended to be planted on private property, and residents are reminded that utility locates have been ordered through Ontario One Call to ensure safe planting conditions.
This initiative continues the town’s work to improve local green spaces, building on the more than 4,600 trees planted in parks and community areas since 2019. These projects are supported by ongoing partnerships with groups such as the Niagara Peninsula Conservation Authority and TD Tree Days.
