A 38-year-old woman faces drug charges following a traffic stop in Welland on February 28, 2026. Officers with the Niagara Regional Police Service were on proactive patrol when they stopped a vehicle near East Main Street and Division Street.

During the stop, police found 14.7 grams of suspected yellow fentanyl. This type of drug is known for being very strong and dangerous to the community. The seized drugs are estimated to be worth more than $1,400 on the street.

Heather Caldwell of Welland has been charged with possession of a schedule I substance for the purpose of trafficking and possession of proceeds of property obtained by crime under $5,000. She is also charged with driving while her licence was suspended.

While this arrest occurred in Welland, it follows a major police operation in nearby Grimsby on February 26, 2026. In that case, officers seized $1.5 million worth of drugs and arrested three people after searching local homes as part of a home invasion investigation.

Health officials say that yellow fentanyl is a high-potency drug that increases the risk of an overdose. The local police service is continuing to use active patrols to remove these types of substances from the community.
