A Calgary company is proposing to set up a beef jerky production and distribution business on 112 Street East in High River, and residents have until August 26, 2026, to appeal the conditional approval.
Iron Horse Jerky Co. Ltd has applied for Development Permit No. 11002/26 to combine business office, agricultural processing and distribution, and light manufacturing at 498252 112 St E. The application, a discretionary temporary use for up to two years, received conditional approval from the Development Authority on August 5.
The property falls within High River’s northeast annexed area, which the Town assumed from Foothills County in 2021. The site is part of a larger area being studied under the Northeast Area Structure Plan, which will guide future development near Highway 2 and Highway 2A.
Because the use is discretionary and temporary, neighbours and any other affected parties may file a written appeal to the Subdivision and Development Appeal Board by the deadline. A $300 fee applies, as set out in the Municipal Government Act. Appeals can be directed to the Town of High River Planning and Development Division.
Iron Horse Jerky Co. Ltd is an active Alberta corporation based in Calgary, incorporated in January 2024. The company has undergone two name changes, from 2582525 Alberta Ltd to Red Dog Jerky Co. Ltd in August 2024, and to its current name in April 2025.
High River is already home to a major beef processing employer, the Cargill facility, which processes about 4,700 head of cattle daily with roughly 2,200 workers. The proposed jerky operation would add a smaller-scale food processing use in the rapidly evolving east side of town.
