The Kingston Health Sciences Centre in Kingston, Ontario, reached a major milestone on March 19, 2026, when it completed its 1,000th PET-CT scan. This target was met in just 11 months, which is more than a month earlier than the hospital staff had originally scheduled for the program’s first year.
The PET-CT program, which uses advanced imaging to find and track complex conditions like cancer, was launched in March 2025. It was made possible by a $10 million investment from the provincial government and community donations through the University Hospitals Kingston Foundation.
Having this technology in the city helps patients get the answers they need without leaving the region. Before the equipment was installed, Cancer Care Ontario estimated that approximately 1,000 local patients had to travel to Ottawa or Toronto every year to get these types of tests.
Hospital leaders say that providing this service locally reduces the stress of travel for those managing difficult illnesses. Dr. Omar Islam, Head of Radiology at KHSC and Queen’s University, says reaching this goal so quickly shows how important it is to have these services available right in the community.
