Leduc, Alberta, has officially hit a population milestone, with 40,000 people now calling the city home. The City of Leduc announced the news on September 9, 2026, and is marking the occasion with a five-part storytelling campaign that looks back at the defining moments that shaped the community.
According to provincial data, Leduc grew by roughly 17.1 per cent over the last five-year tracking period, adding approximately 6,000 residents. That makes it one of the fastest-growing mid-sized cities in the Edmonton Metropolitan Region.
Mayor Lars Hansen, who was elected in October 2025, said the city is committed to responsible growth planning while keeping its community-minded values. In 2025, Leduc grew three times faster than expected, which led the city to start work on a new 2027-2030 Strategic Plan focused on building a connected community for all.
To help handle the growth, Leduc received $7.6 million through the federal Housing Accelerator Fund to create 1,330 housing units over three years. The city also issued building permits for 629 new residential units in 2024, a 79 per cent jump from 352 permits in 2023.
Infrastructure is keeping pace too. The $122 million 65 Avenue and QEII Interchange was completed in November 2025, opening up the Leduc Landing Business Park and improving connections to the Edmonton International Airport and major highways. The city is also pursuing land annexation from Leduc County to the south and southeast, and building a third fire station in the Harvest Industrial Business Park to cut emergency response times by nearly 25 per cent.
