The Alberta government announced on March 26, 2026, that Budget 2026 includes funding for a new high school in Beaumont and planning for another school in Leduc, Alberta. This provincial investment aims to help the Black Gold School Division manage rapid population growth and overcrowded classrooms in the region.
The province is funding a new public high school for grades 10 to 12 in Beaumont and starting the planning process for a future school project in Leduc. These projects are part of the School Construction Accelerator Program, which is an 8.6 billion dollar effort to create 200,000 new student spaces across the province by 2032.
According to the City of Beaumont, the community is the third fastest-growing in Alberta, and about one-quarter of its residents are under the age of 15. The existing public high school in the city is already filled past its intended capacity and is expected to reach 126 per cent capacity by September 2026.
Leduc has also seen steady growth, with its population rising to 36,060 in recent years. While Ohpaho Secondary School opened in Leduc in September 2024 to help with the increase in students, the new planning funds will help the community prepare for future needs. In Beaumont, the city has already secured a 13.76-acre site in the Azur-Lakeview neighbourhood to save money and ensure the project is ready for construction.
The provincial government reports that Alberta has added about 80,000 new students over the last three years. Budget 2026 allocates 3.3 billion dollars over three years to build and modernize schools to keep up with the demand for education infrastructure in growing communities.
