The annual Toro Nagashi Lantern Festival returns to the Nikka Yuko Japanese Garden in Lethbridge, Alberta, on August 23, 2026, offering residents a chance to take part in a centuries-old Japanese tradition right in their own community.
Held from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., the festival centres on Toro Nagashi, a ceremony in which paper lanterns are set afloat on water to guide the spirits of ancestors back to the other world. Admission is $20 per person and includes a drink, a cookie, and full access to the event.
The garden itself sits on 3.75 acres along the west shore of Henderson Lake at 835 Mayor Magrath Drive South. Its name, “Nikka Yuko,” means “Japan-Canada friendship,” reflecting its founding during Canada’s 1967 Centennial celebrations. The site is owned by the City of Lethbridge and operated by the Lethbridge & District Japanese Garden Society.
