Almonte and Pakenham families are being asked to step behind the bench this hockey season. The Almonte Pakenham Minor Hockey Association (APMHA) is looking for volunteer coaches and trainers to work with young players in Mississippi Mills, Ontario.
The association posted the call on August 28, 2026, saying it wants dedicated people who can do more than run drills. In its announcement, APMHA said volunteers can “mentor young players, build confidence, encourage teamwork, and create a positive hockey experience.”
Interested adults can apply online through the APMHA website. No prior coaching experience is mentioned as a requirement, but the association says enthusiasm and a willingness to help kids are key.
The push for volunteers comes as youth hockey faces a shortage of coaches across Canada. National participation in minor hockey has fallen by about one third over the past 15 years, and Ontario has seen a 25 percent decline. Fewer players often means fewer parents available to volunteer, and the cost of coaching certifications can be another barrier.
APMHA runs house league and competitive programs for players up to U18. The association is part of Hockey Eastern Ontario, the regional governing body under Hockey Canada.
