Residents in Morris, Manitoba should prepare for a sharp shift in weather as a late-season winter storm moves into the region from Thursday, April 16 through Friday, April 17, 2026. Environment Canada has issued a special weather statement for the area, warning of potential freezing rain followed by snow that could complicate travel and ongoing flood management efforts.
The storm brings a sudden change in temperatures. After reaching a high of 4°C on Thursday, the mercury is expected to drop to -4°C overnight. The cooldown continues through the weekend, with a high of -2°C and an overnight low of -7°C on Friday, followed by a Saturday high of 2°C and a low of -8°C. Forecasters expect between 2 and 4 cm of snow to accumulate in the Morris area by Friday morning.
This weather arrives while the community is already managing active flood conditions. The Rural Municipality of Morris, led by Reeve Ralph Groening, has municipal staff working extended hours to manage high water events and protect local properties. This system is the third consecutive storm to hit the region in recent weeks, leaving the ground saturated and river levels elevated.
Beyond local efforts, provincial authorities are monitoring the Red River closely. The province expects to operate the Red River Floodway as early as the weekend of April 18-19, 2026, to protect Winnipeg from a second expected crest of the Red River between April 21 and 25.
