Mount Pearl, NL residents waking up to fog and light drizzle this morning can expect conditions to improve by the afternoon, according to Environment Canada. The morning haze is forecast to lift as the day progresses, giving way to partly cloudy skies and a pleasant stretch of weather for the week ahead.
As of 4:30 p.m. NDT, conditions at St. John’s International Airport had already begun to clear, with partly cloudy skies, a temperature of 19.2°C, and visibility of 24 km. Winds from the south-southeast were recorded at 22 km/h.
The 7-day outlook from Environment Canada points to clearing skies on Monday and Tuesday. Daytime highs are expected to reach 22°C, climbing above the seasonal normal of 21°C. The UV index is forecast to be 7, or high, so residents heading outdoors are advised to use sun protection.
However, the fair weather will be short-lived. Showers and periods of rain are forecast to return on Wednesday, with a chance of showers lingering into Friday. Thursday is expected to see a mix of sun and cloud. Despite the wet conditions, temperatures will remain mild, with highs ranging between 18°C and 22°C. This unsettled pattern is typical for July in the region, which averages about 100 mm of rain over 10 days each year.
Mount Pearl’s fog and rapidly changing weather are shaped by its location on the northeastern Avalon Peninsula, where warm Gulf Stream currents collide with the cold Labrador Current. This meeting of air masses makes St. John’s and surrounding communities among the foggiest in Canada. Still, residents can look forward to early-week sun being among the best outdoor conditions the month has to offer, with July typically bringing seven hours of daily sunshine.
