Mount Pearl parents and caregivers with young children have a new free weekly activity at the Ross King Memorial Library starting June 18. The drop-in Family Storytime runs every Thursday from 10:30 to 11:00 a.m. through August 27, with no registration needed.
The program is geared for children ages 0 to 5, although sibling groups are welcome. Each session includes stories, rhymes, movement, and songs designed to build early literacy skills through talking, singing, reading, writing, and playing. Library staff also share ideas families can use at home.
The storytime is part of the TD Summer Reading Club, a national bilingual program offered at over 2,200 public libraries across Canada. The club aims to keep kids reading over the break, when research shows they can lose some of the literacy gains made during the school year.
“Storytime is a time of connection through stories, rhymes, movement and song,” the library states in the event listing. The program is free and families can simply show up at the library, located at 65 Olympic Drive near the Summit Centre and Glacier Arena.
The Ross King Memorial Library is part of the Newfoundland and Labrador Public Libraries network, which runs 94 locations across the province. The system’s budget was increased to $13.5 million in the 2025 provincial budget, supporting expanded programming like this summer storytime series.
