Athletes from the Niverville wrestling program returned home this week with national recognition after a successful showing at the 2026 Canadian Wrestling Championships in Grande Prairie, Alberta.
The competition, which ran from April 24 to April 26, 2026, brought together nearly 900 athletes, coaches, and officials from across the country. Representing Niverville at the event, Ryan Unrau secured a gold medal in the U15 Men’s 85kg weight class. Teammate Nyles Fast also reached the podium with a silver medal, while fellow wrestlers Noah Fast and Lilyanne Reuter finished the tournament with three and two wins, respectively.
The local wrestlers train through the Winnipeg Academy of Mixed Martial Arts chapter based out of the Niverville Community Resource & Recreation Centre. The centre, which opened in 2021, serves as a hub for various town sports programs. According to Niverville Recreation & Wellness, these national results build on a strong tradition for the club, as several of these athletes previously earned top placements during the 2025 Manitoba Provincial Championships.
The national championships were organized by Wrestling Canada Lutte and hosted at the Design Works Centre. Residents interested in learning more about the local wrestling program or registration for future seasons can contact the town recreation department directly.
