The Orangeville Town Council is meeting on March 23, 2026, to consider new parking rules near Orangeville District Secondary School in Orangeville, Ontario. The goal of the proposal is to make the area safer for students and improve the way traffic moves during busy school drop-off times.
The suggested changes focus on parts of Matthew Street and Fead Street. The plan also includes doing a better job of clearing snow from sidewalks and having bylaw officers focus on teaching drivers about the rules rather than handing out fines right away.
Local resident Noel Ramsey has been speaking up about safety in the area since 2023. He is concerned that younger children from Princess Elizabeth Public School have to walk through the high school pickup area where there are no sidewalks.
In 2021, the town chose not to build sidewalks on Faulkner Street and Sunset Drive after most people living on those streets said they did not want them. Since then, the town has used a one-sided parking rule on many local roads to make sure emergency vehicles can get through easily.
According to the town’s policy on bylaw enforcement, officers usually try to fix problems through conversation and voluntary compliance first. Fines are typically used only if the education-based approach does not work.
Orangeville District Secondary School is located at 22 Faulkner Street and has about 1,250 students. The council will review how these parking and safety changes might help manage the large number of people and cars in the neighbourhood each school day.
