More people are using public transit in Orangeville, with community reports indicating a potential 15 percent increase in ridership during the first three months of 2026 compared to the same period last year. This steady growth continues a trend that began after the Town of Orangeville introduced a fare-free pilot program in January 2023.
The success of the fare-free program, which was extended by the Town of Orangeville Council in September 2024 until July 2027, has helped move ridership numbers well beyond pre-pandemic levels. While the town saw approximately 103,000 riders annually before the pandemic, the program helped increase that figure to an anticipated 262,780 riders by the end of 2024.
Building on this momentum, the town is exploring further route expansions to be introduced this summer. These potential changes follow a significant overhaul of the system that took place in September 2025, which introduced a new four-route system and extended operating hours to better serve residents and shift workers.
To support the growing demand, the town is also preparing to receive a fleet of new, accessible buses in mid-2026. These vehicles will be equipped with cleaner emissions technology, bike racks, and SmartRider technology designed to assist passengers with mobility needs.
